On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led forces attacked Israel in an operation that killed roughly 1,200 people and took hundreds of hostages. The attack is one of the most thoroughly documented single days of violence in the region's recent history: body-cam footage, forensic reports, survivor testimony, and hostage accounts all exist in the record. That same density of documentation is also where several widely repeated claims about the day have collapsed under scrutiny, including two specific accounts that were later disputed by the same outlets that first reported them.

October 7, 2023: Hamas's al-Qassam Brigades issued a communique announcing the start of the al-Aqsa Flood operation, stating more than 5,000 missiles and rockets were launched in the first twenty minutes. [DOCUMENTED]
The IDF released body-cam footage recovered from attackers, documenting killings and abductions at multiple sites. [DOCUMENTED]
A New York Times report on sexual violence during the attack included an account from a paramedic describing two teenage sisters found with signs of assault at Kibbutz Be'eri. The New York Times's own later reporting found the girls were fully clothed with no apparent signs of sexual violence, directly disputing the paramedic's account. [DOCUMENTED]
ZAKA volunteer Yossi Landau gave widely circulated testimony describing extreme brutality at Kibbutz Be'eri. The Associated Press, the United Nations, and Haaretz subsequently documented that specific claims within Landau's testimony were false. [DOCUMENTED]
Haaretz reported that an Israeli military investigation found 13 hostage deaths at Be'eri resulted in part from a tank shelling a house where hostage Yasmin Porat was being held. [DOCUMENTED]
October 17, 2023: An explosion at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in Gaza killed a disputed number of people. Bellingcat, The New York Times, and Le Monde each conducted independent visual investigations. All three explicitly described their own findings as preliminary or inconclusive and did not establish a definitive cause. [DOCUMENTED]
October 18, 2023: The White House stated it had seen intelligence supporting the assessment that Palestinian Islamic Jihad, not Israel, was responsible for the blast, while President Biden separately expressed condolences for the loss of life. [DOCUMENTED]
The IDF released a technical assessment after an internal review concluding Islamic Jihad was responsible for a failed rocket launch that struck the hospital. [DOCUMENTED]

What the Record Does Not Establish
The record does not establish a cause for the Al-Ahli Hospital explosion. Every independent investigation that examined it, including two conducted by outlets with no stake in either side's narrative, called its own findings preliminary or inconclusive. Treating any single account of that explosion as settled misrepresents what the investigators themselves said. The record also does not support specific claims within the Be'eri accounts that were later retracted or disputed by the same reporting bodies that first carried them; the broader attack and its scale are documented independently of those specific disputed claims.
